TBSM – Sydney’s Bicycle Emporium chats to Weldtite

February 9, 2014

THE MAIN REASON WE WANTED TO PROFILE WELDTITE ON THIS ISSUE’S INDUSTRY PAGE WAS SIMPLE; THE PAST FEW YEARS WE’VE BEEN USING THEIR TF2 LUBRICANT IN OUR WORKSHOP OUT THE BACK ON ALL OF THE TEST BIKES THAT COME THROUGH THE MAG

– AND IT’S BLOODY GOOD STUFF! UNFAMILIAR AND CURIOUS ABOUT OTHER PRODUCTS IN THE WELDTITE RANGE WE DECIDED TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THEM (VIA JETBLACK, THEIR AUSTRALIAN DISTRIBUTOR) TO FIND OUT MORE.

Thanks for taking the time to talk with us today. We’re big fans of your TF2 chain lube and only recently we discovered that its magical ingredient is in fact Teflon!? The same stuff that non-stick pots and pans is coated in. We’ve never heard of anyone using it for chain lube?

Chris Jenkinson – Director Of Weldtite Global Sales: Ha that is correct, our chain lubricant does contain Teflon, and it is pretty incredible stuff. The reason it is not widely known is that obtaining the rights to use it not easy. Right now there are actually only two companies licensed to use Teflon in bicycle lubricants. Our products have the biggest reach spanning across the whole of Europe, South America and Asia. All our products have to be certified by Dupont and therefore formulated to the highest Quality.

Wicked. Can you tell us about some of Weldtite’s core products, features and technologies?

We are a British company that has been operating for over 70 years. Weldtite are the UK’s leading cycle maintenance manufacturer and one of the largest in the world. The lubes can be applied in various ways either using a drip bottle or an aerosol spray. TF2 spray lube or as it known “The Big Green Can” is the No.1 Worldwide best selling Teflon based lubricant spray.

What was the concept behind your ‘Pure’ range?

The PURE range of bicycle maintenance products has been developed to meet the clear consumer demand for products that offer a ‘greener’ alternative. The Pure range of bicycle maintenance products comprises of cleaners, lubricants and protector has been developed to achieve excellent functional performance whilst minimising any impact to the environment. All the PURE products are 100% free of petroleum based solvents and maximise the use of sustainable ingredients derived from natural and renewable resources whilst also being fully bio-degradable by internationally recognised standards. In addition and wherever possible we have minimised the amount of packaging and only used materials which have been recycled or are recyclable.

Were did the Weldtite story began?

Weldtite was founded in 1939 as a brand name of C.B.Baggs Ltd of London. The focus of their cycle business at that time was making puncture repair kits for the War Office. Since then the business has evolved many times to the point that today Weldtite manufactures the world’s most comprehensive and innovative range of bicycle maintenance products. That range includes tyre repair materials, specialist lubricants and cleaners, valve accessories and workshop and consumer tools. Our base is a 40,000 square feet manufacturing and storage facility in Lincolnshire, Northern England.

Wow, it all started from a puncture repair kit! Do you guys even still make them?

Ha, we sure do. In fact we are now the second largest suppliers of puncture repair kits to the cycle trade in Europe.

In your opinion who is the quintessential Weldtite customer?

As I touched on above, we offer full range of bicycle baintenance items for all types of cyclists, but our quintessential customer is the cyclist who is looking for the best products to maintain their bike in the knowledge that they have been developed to the highest quality.

Your website features a stack of maintenance tips and info, and not all specifically relating to your products. That’s pretty cool that you guys have built an extensive tech resource up there that anyone can benefit from. What was the idea behind your site?

The idea behind the site is to offer the cyclist an information centre to all things maintenance. But stay tuned as we are just about to upload seven new videos to replace some of the ageing footage filmed over ten years ago.
