Weldtite sponsors Mountain Trax – Vauxhall Motors Cycling Team updates…

April 25, 2014

6th April – After a strong showing by the team at the opening round of the Southern XC Series we were hoping Isaac could continue the positive start at round 2 at Checkendon.

After a week of illness though Isaac was put on antibiotics by doctors and was left feeling a little uneasy about racing.

Isaac - “I felt ok riding on Friday morning but Saturday I felt tired and run down so didn’t think I’d be able to race but started to feel better later that day. Sunday morning came but I didn’t feel 100% like racing but went into the race with a positive attitude and felt good once the race got going.

Ade Lansley, Steve James and I got a gap on lap 1 and the gap grew lap by lap. All of us had a little pop at trying to drop one another but the elastic wouldn’t snap. Eventually it came down to a last lap dash. Lap 6 after 1 hour 30 of racing I upped the pace ever so slightly and saw Ade was on the back foot, Steve then counter attacked. This was around half way through the final lap. Steve was looking strong so I knew it would be hard to stay with him. Unfortunately despite my best efforts I couldn’t stick with the pace and lost 20 seconds by the line but kept second place. Another good event by Southern XC. Thanks to John from Vermont Images for handing up the USN drinks and giving general support.”

13th April – The UCI World Marathon Series is a big goal for the team this year with Ben hopefully attending rounds in France, Belgium, Czech Republic and Switzerland. The first European round of the Series was once again hosted by the Roc Laissagais marathon. The Elite men were covering 85kms of rocky undulating terrain with 3000 metres of climbing.

After last year’s 17th place finish Ben was hoping for another strong result.

Ben – “This was the second year in a row we’ve been to the event, after last year the pressure was on for another good result. The pace out of Laissac was pretty swift but it soon relaxed on the gravel road heading out into the countryside. I moved up towards the top 10 just before the course goes off road proper. I’m not sure if I’d not warmed up properly or if I wasn’t used to climbing on the new bike or maybe it was a combination but I suffered on the steeper climbs today, work to be done! Fortunately there were only a few steep climbs early on and everywhere else I was flying and making up plenty of places. The Spark 29RC full suss made easy work of the rocky descents whilst everyone else suffered, I can’t remember the last time I had that much fun in a race pinning descents. The Rotor Rex chainset made climbing smoother and easier to produce power.

“Unfortunately today proved that these events can’t be raced properly without a support team, there were 6 feed/ technical zones today and I raced the first 70kms or 3 hours 30 on one 750ml bottle in 20 degree heat, I’m sure you don’t need USN to confirm that’s sub optimal! Most of the riders I was racing had supports at each feed zone with bottles and bike spares. I ran out of drink after 2 hours so rode for about 30kms without nutrition. It didn’t take long to blow so I crawled along trying not to let too many riders past.

“Reaching feed zone 6 I was relieved to finally see Tim who handed up a bottle of USN Spike, I’ve never needed a drink more in my life! Combined with a Vooma caffeine gel I soon started to feel better and even made up a couple of places in the last 15 kilometres eventually crossing the line in 19th! The result was good enough to qualify for World Championships in July but I’m pretty sure a top 10 might have been possible with feed support. Although the result feels a little disappointing a top 20 at any of these UCI World Marathon Series events is still a great result, I look forward to the next round.”

Hopefully with some support at the next round in Belgium Ben can achieve that top 10 result.

Next up for the team is Southern XC round 3 at Crow Hill on 27th April.
