Mountain Trax – Vauxhall Motors Cycling Team UPDATE: BUSY OFF SEASON, NEW BIKES AND NEW RIDERS FOR 2015!

November 12, 2014

The season ends and all goes quiet, the team staff and riders just relax and go on holiday until the start of the following season. Right?

Since that magical weekend on the Isle of Man where the team smashed the course record taking 1st, 2nd, and 5th (http://ukxcnews.com/2014/09/09/race-report-manx-end- to-end-14/) the busy off season has begun as we work away behind the scenes so that when we reappear for the start of the 2015 season we’ll be a bigger and better team.

Over the last couple of months we’ve been meeting, phoning and emailing existing and new sponsors. We spent 2 days on the Rotor Components stand at the NEC Birmingham. The staff from Velotech (Rotor’s UK importer) are a great bunch and we had a good laugh over the 2 days. Be sure to check out their fantastic range of products, our Rex QX1 chainsets have been a revelation this year.

NEW RIDER LINE UP

Next year will see a new rider line up; it’s with great sadness to say goodbye to 2 great athletes, both Sam Stean and Tim Dunford will be leaving the team. We wish both the very best for their future racing adventures.

As soon as we noticed Sam in 2013 we could see the potential this youngster has. We signed him up for 2014, unfortunately a previous injury hindered his progress but the talent was still obvious. It’s not often that the great Nick Craig has to ask someone to slow down on the climbs!

Tim Dunford joined the team in 2013. He travelled with the team to events all around the world including South Africa for Joberg2c, Spain for Andalucia Bike Race, and France for the World Marathon Championships. During Tim’s time on the team he became a dominant force in 12 hour racing. The highlight from Tim’s time on the team was his European 12 hour title won in 2013.

BIKE TESTING

In early October Isaac, myself and 1 of the 2 new riders met up to decide what bikes we’d be race next season. For me the decision is pretty clear as the bigger 29 wheels suit the marathon style of events. However for the XC riders it’s a little more unclear. We are lucky enough to have Scott as our bike sponsor; there aren’t many brands who offer decent hardtail and full suspension options on both 27.5 and 29 wheels.

We spent the day testing 6 bikes around 2 different circuits. There was some interesting results with plenty of analysis going into the lap times, heart rate, power and segment

times. A test like this would be easy enough for most individual racers or leisure cyclists to carry out especially with shops like Mountain Trax having a large range of demo bikes available. http://www.mountain-trax.com/page/39/Demo_Center

The riders were presented with the data and then it was left completely for them to decide what bike they would ride in 2015. Not everyone decided to go with the bike they were quickest on. Sometimes you just feel comfortable on a bike and that is the best choice.

What would you choose – wheel size and frame? Let us know on Facebook.

RACE RESULTS

Isaac has continued racing at several regional events. On 5th October Isaac raced and won round 3 of the Ratz Rampage Series near Reading. “A good race over at Checkendon against a strong Phillip Pearce, the winter Scott Scale Carbon worked a treat, thanks to the team for all the kit and nutrition to get the job done. Me and Phil had a good race and I just got a jump on him in the closing stages of the race.”

Isaac then raced the Bec Hill Climb on 12th October finishing a fantastic 9th in a time of 1:59 putting 4 seconds on pro David Millar! Jack pullar won the event in 1:49. Then on 18th October Isaac won the Exposure Lights Night of Knobbly Tread. After battling hard with Scott Chappell for the first 4 laps Isaac then “put the hammer down on lap 5″ to open up a gap of nearly a minute over the finish line. Isaac raced using Exposure’s 2200 lumen Reflex and 1300 lumen Diablo lights.

This past weekend Isaac added another win to his palmares finishing first at the Gorrick Autumn Classic in Crowthorne.

For 2015 we welcome new athletes and new sponsors. Keep following for updates.
