Medal Winners at British National Cyclocross Championships

January 14, 2015

The Mountain Trax – Vauxhall Cycling Team made a flying start to the year with 2 great results at the British National Cyclocross Championships including winning a Championship medal. Resplendent in their new Kalas Sportswear kit Mark and Dylan were in action on a clear but cold day. The course was flat with some slippery corners, a few off camber sections, and some mud just before the hurdles. The host town of Abergavenny put on a good show and the Welsh TV channel S4C were at the event filming the action.

Dylan was first off starting at 10.15 in the Under 23 category. A talented field had gathered and set off at a furious speed up the start straight. Dylan explains how the race unfolded.

“I didn’t have the best gridding so ended up just going where was left over on the second row. I was 2nd from the left which at first didn’t seem so good but when the race got going and everyone drifted right it gave me a great opportunity to jump a few places which put me up into the thick of the race. I felt strong from the start and was holding position in the group, over the first couple of laps the group started to stretch out and I was in or around 8th position. Still feeling good I put in a few digs to close gaps and gain a place or 2 here and there. Then about half way through, those early effort started to take its toll and a rider slipped past and I just missed his wheel. I then suffered in no man’s land for a while before finally coming around for the final couple of laps. I got stuck in to the battle for 7th with another 1st year Under 23. We knew each other’s strengths and weaknesses so we were pretty well matched so it came down to the last section through the woods. I made sure I was in the lead and as soon as it opened out I gave it all I had left and got 10 metres which I maintained until I hit the finish straight where I just emptied the tanks and held on for 7th. I was first of the 1st year Under 23’s, which I’m happy with especially after my recent illness and heavy training load.”

There wasn’t much time to take a breather as Mark was off at 11.30 in the Junior category. Having only raced one National Trophy CX race this season in Bradford Mark was gridded back on the 3rd row. Mark talks us through his race,

“I worked really hard in first lap to move up through to the front group. Just as I caught the front group the eventual winner put in a big effort. I think this early effort to catch the group and then try to hang on cost me later in the race. I ran my tub tyres at 18psi which really helped me move up to 3rd place in the slippery conditions. Sadly I couldn’t quite bridge the gap to 2nd. As fatigue set in on the last lap the 4th rider and I were elbow to elbow. I knew I still had a solid sprint left in the legs, this proved to be the case as I finished 3rd winning the bronze medal. It was a good weekend of racing and I really enjoyed it! With a little more cross racing experience I think I can reach that top step.”

Both Dylan and Mark had a great first outing in the new Mountain Trax – Vauxhall team colours. Both gave 100 percent out producing some great results and can leave the event happy with a successful start to their 2015 season. The team now look forward to starting the mountain bike season.
